Police announced on Monday that unidentified assailants in the Caribbean city of Colon shot and killed international defender Gilberto Hernandez of Panama.
Hernandez, who earned two caps for Panama in March of this year, including one in a friendly match against Lionel Messi’s Argentina, passed away on Sunday as a result of gunfire from a passing vehicle, according to authorities.
The shooting injured another six people.
Colon, about 50 miles (80 kilometers) north of Panama City, has seen an increase in crime rates, which the authorities blame to conflict between competing drug gangs.
