United States commemorates 22nd anniversary of 9/11 with moments of silence

On Monday (today), September 11th, it will have been 22 years since the deadliest terror assault on US soil resulted in the collapse of the World Trade Center’s Twin Towers. To commemorate the victims of that attack, memorial services will be held around the United States.

According to accounts from several news outlets, the nationwide 9/11 memorial began with the reading of names of the victims.

Al-Qaeda radicals hijacked American passenger planes and deliberately flew them into the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001.

Joe Biden, the vice president, is expected to attend a memorial service in Anchorage, Alaska, for the 22nd anniversary, while Kamala Harris, the current president, is attending the memorial procession at Ground Zero in lower Manhattan.

There will be six minutes of silence in all, one for each of the towers being hit and destroyed, as well as for the periods of the Pentagon attack and United Flight 93 accident.
