Burkina Faso’s intelligence and security services say they stopped a coup attempt on Tuesday.
The remark was aired on national television by the military government’s spokesman, Rimtalba Jean Emmanuel Ouedraogo.
The junta claimed in a statement that they had prevented an effort by some military commanders to overthrow Capt. Ibrahim Traoré and throw the country into turmoil.
The statement also revealed the arrest of police officers suspected of involvement in the plot.
The sinister plot to undermine the Republic’s pillars and throw the country into anarchy… the plot’s masterminds will be exposed with the help of investigators.
Authorities have “arrested officers and other alleged actors involved in this attempt at destabilization,” the statement read.
An official statement from the military administration expressed sadness “that officers whose oath is to defend their homeland have strayed into an undertaking of this nature” and pledged to provide as much information as possible about the plot.
Capt. Ibrahim Traoré, the interim President of Burkina Faso, reportedly took control in a coup d’état in September 2022, as reported by kuryaloaded.
As the government struggles to overcome an Islamist insurgency, that was the second coup in as many years.
