After the World Cup victory, Messi doesn’t deserve a standing ovation, claims PSG’s Rothen

Former PSG midfielder Jerome Rothen maintains that after Argentina and Lionel Messi won the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, PSG supporters at Parc des Princes should not have given Messi a standing ovation.

Rothen claimed that Messi absolutely squandered his first season with PSG and deserved the jeers of PSG supporters.

When Messi, 35, transferred from Barcelona to PSG in 2021, it was a season to forget.

In the league that year, the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner only netted six goals.

“He [Lionel Messi] has been at PSG for a year and a half, and the first year was absolutely wasted,” Rothen stated in a statement to RMC Sport. I don’t mind having time to adjust, but Leo’s and Neymar’s attitudes for a year were, in my opinion, out of line, which is why there was so much criticism of them.

Yes, some of the supporters last year insulted him too much. But that was only because they shared my disappointment in not seeing Messi play in [the French] Ligue 1. And you want to ask people to applaud him there with the World Cup on? And is he going to look for solace there? Yes, yes, yes.
