Salman Yusuf, a close adviser to Gen. Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, the former military leader, has warned Nigerians to shun scammers who use IBB’s name to spread false information on social media.
The older statesman cannot send messages on any social media platform, according to Yusuf, who delivered the advice in Minna, because he does not manage any social media accounts, particularly Facebook.
He explained that the Facebook account being used with IBB’s name and photo is fraudulent and was made by local and international identity thieves and cybercriminals in order to cheat, mislead, and commit horrific crimes against both Nigerians and foreigners.
“Our attention has been directed to a multitude of phony social media pages, mainly Facebook, bearing General Babangida’s identities and images,” the aide said. We would want to make it clear that IBB has never had any social media accounts and has no plans to open any in the near future.
He said that the former military leader refrains from making social media comments on important national matters because he has unrestricted access to a number of reliable mainstream media outlets with which he may speak whenever he has strong opinions on any subject.
There are official avenues available to him through which he can inform the authorities of his position on any national matter, Yusuf stressed.
He pleaded with the populace to disregard the mischief of cyberterrorists “who do not wish kindly for our magnificent country.”
In addition, he urged Nigerians to behave peacefully, participate in the democratic process, and exercise their constitutional rights by casting ballots for the candidates of their choice in the next general elections.
