David Beckham, co-owner of Inter Miami, has explained why the club made a bid for Lionel Messi, captain of Argentina’s national soccer team.
After the summer’s expiration of his contract with Paris Saint-Germain, Messi signed with Inter Miami as a free agent.
The 36-year-old’s signing with Inter Miami was revealed on Saturday.
When asked why his club signed Messi, Beckham answered it was because he wanted to bring the best players in the world to Miami.
Beckham claims that one of his goals is to have a lasting impact on American football.
When I first set out on my quest to found a new team in Miami ten years ago, I said that one of my goals was to attract the world’s top athletes to the Magic City.
I wanted to surround myself with players who shared my vision for the future of the sport we all love here in the United States and the LA Galaxy.
That dream came true today. Beckham said (via Evening Standard) of Messi’s signing, “I could not be prouder that a player of Leo’s [Lionel Messi] caliber is joining our club, but I am also delighted to welcome a good friend, an amazing person, and his beautiful family to join our Inter Miami community.”
