Dimitri De Conde, Genk’s sports director, expressed regret at the departure of talismanic forward Paul Onuachu.
Onuachu parted ways with the Belgian Pro League team on Tuesday, going to Southampton in a €21 million deal.
During his stay at the Cegeka Arena, the 28-year-old became a cult icon.
The Nigeria international joins the Limburgers in 2019 from Danish club FC Midtjylland, where he scored 84 goals in 134 games.
The lanky striker also holds the record for most goals scored in a single season in the Belgian division, with 33 in 38 appearances during the 2020/21 season.
“We could no longer prevent him from realizing his dream. “I’m glad Paul is grateful to the club for that,” De Conde told HLN.
“Of course, his departure is a significant loss for our current selection. We shouldn’t be so naive about it. We were, nevertheless, prepared for a probable exit.”
