The Delta State chapter of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has urged law enforcement to quickly widen their search for Dr. Uyi Iluobe’s killers.

On December 29, 2022, Uyi was assassinated while at work in Oghara, Ethiope West Local Government Area, Delta State.

NMA chairman in Delta State, Dr. Okolakpa Carter, demanded of the Delta State Police Command in a press conference today in Asaba to urgently conduct a comprehensive investigation.

The NMA demanded an investigation into the allegations that the deceased’s life was in danger due to a previously treated and discharged gunshot victim who refused to pay his debts sometime in October of last year.

Dr. Okolakpa, who was present at the press conference through the Vice Chairman, Dr. Okwuze Anthony, urged Governor Ifeanyi Okowa to take all necessary steps to help the slain person’s family and the entire medical profession obtain justice.

“Our departed colleague was summoned to respond to an emergency in his clinic on December 29, 2022, at around 7:30 p.m. When he arrived, he encountered a woman who had allegedly complained of excruciating abdominal pain.

“Since it was an emergency, the doctor began treating her right away. The patient dialed an unidentified number while being examined on the couch and said, “I dey there make una come.”

When the deceased questioned the patient who she was phoning, the patient allegedly replied, “Those who will pay the expenses.”

Some unidentified shooters allegedly entered the clinic a short while later and gave everyone the order to lie face down. They approached the victim, shot him twice in the chest, and then drove off in a black Toyota saloon with tinted windows with the woman who had purported to be a patient.

At the briefing, NMA also disclosed instances in which the dead had been threatened with death by some youngsters in the neighborhood, saying that the police were aware of these incidents because it was the police who made sure the gunshot victim paid for his medical care.

NMA raised concern that the Oghara police authority had not yet obtained statements from the nurses who had been on the scene of the crime.

Also, NMA expressed dismay over the hasty conclusion of the police that the killing was cult related. The association charged the police to do a thorough investigation and come out with their findings.
