Enzo Fernandez does a last-minute U-turn against Chelsea

Enzo Fernandez, a midfielder for Benfica, has made a late U-turn despite interest from Chelsea.

Fernandez is currently attempting to sign with Chelsea before the January transfer window closes on Tuesday.

Chelsea have been negotiating with Benfica for Fernandez’s signature for several weeks but have been unable to reach an agreement with the Portuguese giants.

Benfica has been determined that the Blues must pay Fernandez’s €120 million release clause, and the Blues’ attempt to fulfill that sum by providing the fee in installments has been refused.

Meanwhile, Fernandez was reprimanded by Benfica earlier this month for attempting to push a move to Chelsea by missing two training sessions and going to Argentina without authorization for New Year’s celebrations.

After scoring in Benfica’s Portuguese Cup win over Varzim, the 22-year-old looked to indicate that he intended to stay in Portugal with his celebration in front of Benfica fans.

According to Record, Fernandez has changed his mind and has told Benfica that he wants to join Graham Potter’s side before the transfer window ends on Tuesday.

According to the source, Chelsea board members are now traveling to Lisbon to negotiate directly with Benfica in attempt to gain Fernandez’s signature.
