Ibom Innovation Network, a group of digital experts in Akwa Ibom State, has spoken out against the gender gap in the tech industry and asked for more women to enter the field.
The group voiced its worries at a news conference held in Uyo to celebrate its second technology week.
The organization’s PR representative, Idongesit Essien, stated that women and the general public don’t seem to know what’s going on in the IT industry, and that more education is needed so they can see why it makes sense for them to pursue careers in the sector.
When asked about the gender imbalance in the tech industry, he responded, “Though it is a male-dominated profession, there should be a consciousness for the women to embrace tech and know that it brings many opportunities.”
We’re focusing on teens and young adults above the age of 16. We hope to reach those in Nigeria’s secondary schools, universities, financial and government sectors, and especially the country’s scientific and technology regulators.
With the use of technology, whether hardware, software, or a combination of the two, we hope that people will be able to recognize issues and find workable solutions. This is an opportunity for people to meet one other and be inspired.
