On Monday, Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State declared an outright ban on metal scavenging throughout the state.
The governor promised an order from the executive branch will be made in that regard.
During a trip to the Bulumkutu neighborhood of Maiduguri, the state capital, Zulum saw several metals vandalized by scavengers from government structures.
You can see streetlights and radio and television towers; all of those are government-owned properties. Such actions can disrupt official government operations at the state and federal levels.
We can’t have that happening, therefore I’m going to speak out against it and declare a temporary ban on metal scavenging in Borno. For this reason, I shall be issuing an executive order prohibiting all metal scavenging in Borno,” Zulum declared.
The governor expressed regret that numerous dumpster divers had been killed by terrorists while looting abandoned settlements.
