The Coalition of Shiroro Association’s request to rename the 700 megawatt Zungeru dam in the state’s Wushishi local government region has been denounced by the Zungeru Youths Development Association.
The organization made this statement at a news conference in Zungeru, Wushishi LG, through its spokesperson, Mr. Ammar Abubakar, and President, Idris Abubakar.
Remember how, in August 2021, the Coalition of Shiroro Association urged the federal government to rename the Zungeru dam as “Shiroro dam II or Mata dam,” claiming that the dam was being hosted by Shiroro-area properties.
However, the Zungeru youth disputed the Coalition’s assertions, claiming that Wushishi LG was where the dam was located and that the majority of the communities that had been inundated were there.
They stated that the new Gungu neighborhood in Wushishi LG is where the Gungu community and all the relocated settlers are currently located.
The Land Use Act of 1978’s sections 28 and 29 give the government the authority to remove landownership rights, particularly where the public interest is paramount, the conveners argued.
“The government cannot be ordered to name the dam by the Coalition of Shiroro Associations.”
The group’s leaders admitted that because robbers may now easily cross from Akare to assault the community, the Zungeru community is now more vulnerable to security concerns as a result of the construction of the Zungeru dam.
The community prioritized national development over individual interests, they added, adding that the dam project had an impact on economic activities in Zungeru and the surrounding area including fishing and dry-season farming as well as the supply of portable drinking water.
