The Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, has stated that Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State’s claim of security concerns has no influence on the country’s ongoing currency swap.
Ganduje announced during an interactive session with key stakeholders, including intellectuals, lawmakers, political leaders, and the state’s business sector, that his administration had asked President Muhammadu Buhari to postpone his official visit to Kano.
Kano, he added, was deeply concerned about the hardship caused mostly by the ongoing cash switch from old to redesigned Naira notes.
He stated that the decision was made to avoid any unforeseen complications.
The CBN governor, however, refuted Ganduje’s claim, telling NAN: “I don’t comprehend the relationship between CBN policy and security concerns in Kano State.”
Meanwhile, early on Sunday morning, Buhari granted a ten-day extension of the existing currency swap, pushing the deadline from January 31 to February 10.
