The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that it would shortly begin the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) campaign in Ondo and Edo states in order to ensure that all eligible voters are able to cast ballots in the next governorship elections in September and November, respectively.
This was revealed Tuesday in Abuja during the second regular quarterly consultation meeting with political parties by INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu.
He announced that, with the party primaries over and the deadline for withdrawals and substitutions of candidates having passed, the Commission has released the final list of candidates for the Edo State governorship election.
Politicians’ open campaigns, in his view, began on April 24, 2024, and will conclude at midnight on September 19, 2024—that is, one day before the legally mandated election date—according to the legislation.
In a message to party leaders, he emphasized the importance of staying lawful during the election and beyond. “As we approach Election Day in Edo State, it is also imperative to remind political parties of the need to adhere strictly to the timeline for the upload of the list of polling and collation agents to the dedicated portal,” he said. In this way, the Commission can ensure that the 3,587 agents responsible for ward, local government, and state collation, as well as the 76,823 agents working in polling units, receive their identity cards in plenty of time for the upcoming election.
In regards to Ondo State, he announced that 18 political parties had finished their primaries, which were overseen by INEC. He also reminded the parties that they have one week until the deadline for candidate nominations, which is 6pm on Monday, May 20, 2024, when the portal shall automatically close.
Please do your best to meet the deadline. After the primaries conclude, political parties have 23 days (more than three weeks) to finalize their candidate lists for the governorship and vice president and submit them to the Commission. No further time will be given.
