If defender Harry Maguire stays at Old Trafford next season, Rio Ferdinand says he will be used only as a substitute.
The Manchester United great thinks that Maguire, if he wants to be a starting player next season, will have to depart Old Trafford this summer.
Maguire lost his position as captain of Man United this month.
The England international has fallen out of manager Erik ten Hag’s good graces at Manchester United.
“Erik ten Hag has a particular way of playing,” Ferdinand said, according to TNT Sports. Harry Maguire isn’t the type of player that fits in with his football philosophy. To implement his defensive mentality, he signed Martinez and Varane, who will start at center back for the team next year.
After starting every game for England at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, returning to Manchester United as a substitute must have been incredibly frustrating for Maguire. It’s impossible to imagine how taxing that was on your psyche. What does he want to do now is the question. The question is, “Does he want to be a bench warmer, or does he want to start for another team?” He will either stay at Manchester United as a reserve player or leave if he is not content in that role. But he’ll be a substitute if he stays with United.
