Arsenal great Paul Merson is stunned by Chelsea FC’s choice to trade away their top players this summer.
Merson was particularly perplexed by the Blues’ decision to sell Mason Mount and Kai Havertz to the opposition.
Both Havertz and Mason have played significant roles for Chelsea over the years.
The Blues won three trophies with the help of these two players: the Champions League, the Club World Cup, and the European Super Cup.
Mount signed with Manchester United for £55 million plus an additional £5 million in add-ons, while Havertz signed with Arsenal for £65 million.
Let’s be honest, selling Mason Mount and Kai Havertz is not good business from Chelsea,” Merson said for Sky Sports. Really, I don’t understand.
It would make sense if Chelsea needed to bring in more cash, but there’s no use in doing so if it means dropping out of the playoff picture and losing even more money in the process.
Why would you weaken yourself by selling two of your greatest players to direct rivals when you know that Manchester United and Arsenal will be in the mix for the top four along with Chelsea next season?
