Naomi Osaka, a four-time major winner and former world number one, has announced that she is pregnant and will miss the 2023 tennis season.
Osaka, who has won the Australian Open twice, just announced her withdrawal from the event.
Osaka has only competed in 11 tournaments in 2022 and hasn’t played a full match since losing in the first round of the US Open.
She also told reporters that after losing in the third round of the 2021 US Open, she was no longer enjoying the sport.
On Wednesday, Osaka tweeted about her pregnancy and included a photo of an ultrasound with the announcement.
“I realize that life is so short, and I don’t take any moments for granted; every day is a new blessing and adventure.
“I am aware that the future holds a lot of promise for me. One thing I’m looking forward to is for my kid to watch one of my matches and tell someone, ‘that’s my mom,’ haha,” she wrote.
