The declaration attributed to Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, that if elected president of Nigeria next year, he will no longer subsidize the price of petroleum goods has drawn criticism from the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress.
Former Chairman of NLC in Cross River State John Ushie spoke on behalf of NLC/TUC and asserted that the union’s opposition to subsidy elimination is ongoing.
During the Labour Party campaign, he stated in Calabar, “We are fully opposed to the withdrawal of fuel subsidies.
“For any government to even consider that is very wrong.
Before considering subsidy withdrawal, the government should first fix all of the nation’s refineries. Let the government consider domestic crude oil refinement.
Additionally, phone-in callers from Calabar’s Sparkling FM radio station accused Tinubu and cited his opposition to subsidy reduction during the administration of Dr. Goodluck Jonathan.
