Prince Michael Ogungbemi, the chairman of the Ajoni Local Government Development Council (LCDA), in the state of Ekiti, has urged the members of the national assembly to support local councils’ legal claim to complete autonomy.
According to Ogungbemi, the complete recognition of the third tier of administration in the nation will promote growth and ensure better governance for the general populace.
We require the national assembly to examine the constitutional provisions and grant local councils in Nigeria functions so that they can once more be formally recognized by the Nigerian constitution and grow as they once did.
In a conversation with reporters in Ayedun, Ikole Local Government Council, Ekiti State, Prince Ogungbemi delivered the charge from his office at Ajoni LCDA.
“The council will still not have a role to play in national government if the constitutional reforms are not done to grant respect to the body.
“If the local council want complete autonomy, the national legislature should implement it through a constitutional instrument.
The third level of government is the local council, which is frequently ignored. The Federal government, the subnational government, and the state have all been recognized under the Nigerian constitution, but the council has not, according to him.
