Police Commission issues directives and condemns the assassination of a lawyer

The shooting of Mrs. Omobolale Raheem, a lawyer, who was allegedly shot dead by an ASP in the Ajah neighborhood of Lagos on Christmas Day, was denounced by the Police Service Commission (PSC) on Tuesday.

In a statement released on Tuesday by Mr. Ikechukwu Ani, the Commission’s Head of the Press and Public Relations Unit, the Commission denounced the murder.

The Commission stated that it was shocked to learn of the senseless murder of Mrs. Bolanle Raheem, a lawyer from Nigeria.

According to kuryaloaded, an ASP assigned to the Ajiwe Police Station in Ajah, Lagos State, shot and murdered Mrs. Raheem.

The Lagos police command detained the ASP and two other officers in connection with the murder.

The Police leadership was instructed to expedite their investigation into the incident and submit their findings to the Commission for review and potential further disciplinary action.

As the situation of unjustified shooting and killing of innocent Nigerians has grown alarming, it also urged the Police to implement a tough program for additional training of its men in weapon handling.

The Commission observed that the police are expected to save and defend lives, not the other way around, based on their constitutional mandate and method of establishment.

The acting chairman of the panel, retired justice Clara Ogunbiyion, expressed sympathy to the deceased’s family, particularly to her husband who was taking her home when they were approached by the police officer with a pistol.
