The biggest loser in the French daily newspaper L’Equipe’s selection of its squad of the year is Cristiano Ronaldo.
The biggest omission from the starting lineup is the Portugal captain, who had a challenging year with Manchester United and his country.
Given his inconsistency in the Red Devils set-up under Erik ten Hag, many people don’t find it odd to see him left off the ideal lineup.
Prior to last month, when Ronaldo’s contract was terminated, he had only scored three goals in 16 games for the Red Devils.
Additionally, Ronaldo had a miserable World Cup 2022 campaign in Qatar, which just ended, and was powerless to prevent Morocco from eliminating Portugal in the quarterfinals.
The five-time winner of the Ballon d’Or left the field in tears and is currently awaiting decision on his upcoming move during the January transfer window.
The team includes:
Courtois
Walker
Gvardiol
Hernandez, T.
Modric
Casemiro
Messi
Bruyne, De
Benzema
