Ayodeji Ayeni, the head coach of Akwa United, acknowledged that blunders contributed to his team’s loss against Bendel Insurance on Sunday night.
The Promise Keepers suffered a 2-0 loss against Insurance in the season opener of the Nigeria Premier Football League 2022–2023.
Imade Osehenkhoe and Sarki Ismael both scored twice in the first half to give Insurance the victory.
Since defeating Sunshine Stars 1-0 in the 2018–19 season, the visitors hadn’t won on the road in the NPFL.
In a news conference following the game, Ayeni stated, “In the first half, we were not coordinated, we were tensed, and my players were apprehensive. At one point, they became impatient to do the task at hand. It’s sad that we committed two errors and paid a high price for them because we lost all three points as a result.
Football has three possible outcomes: wins, losses, and ties. As a coach, I am devastated by our loss today, especially because it was our season’s opening home game. Although there were high hopes and expectations going into the game, the visitors ultimately won. The fact that we lost today doesn’t mean the world; what matters is how we react, and I have faith that we will recover even stronger.
On Saturday, January 14 in Jos, Akwa United will play Nasarawa United in their next NPFL match.
