Two thieves who operate on the 2nd Niger Bridge have been detained by the police in Anambra State.
Recently, it has been reported that the Bridge is a hangout for thieves, and vandals also take advantage of the chance to damage some of the bridge’s equipment.
In a statement made available to kuryaloaded on Monday, State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) DSP Tochukwu Ikenga announced the arrest of the thieves.
He stated: “Last week, members of the Anambra State Police Command stationed at Harbour Division apprehended two criminals who were robbing unwary people on the Second Niger Bridge of their belongings.
“Activities of the gang near the Obosi end of the Bridge were reported to the Police squad that was on surveillance patrol on the Bridge to stop thieves from stealing expansion joints.
“The undercover Police Team kept an eye on the gang and closed in, arresting two of the thugs as the others ran away.
“When the suspects, who were between the ages of 20 and 22, were searched, two daggers and five SIM cards taken from previously stolen phones were found on them.
“One of the accused was an Ebonyi State native, and the other was an Enugu State native.
“CP Aderemi Adeoye, the Commissioner of Police, praised the Police Team for its alertness and bravery in taking on the gang.
He has given the order to track down the owners of the SIM cards that were found in order to gather the necessary evidence to successfully prosecute the suspects who were arrested.
