Workers in Ondo State have called the recent increase in the price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), commonly referred to as gasoline, to N617 per liter evil and the epitome of insensitivity.
After an emergency meeting in Akure, the state capital, workers representing the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), the Trade Union Congress (TUC), and the Joint Negotiating Committee (JNC) vented their frustration that Nigerians were still feeling the effects of the subsidy cuts even as the pump price was raised by another 25%.
They wanted the state government to immediately distribute aid to the people and refund all back wages and benefits to employees.
After the meeting, the workers issued a communiqué in which they said, “The organised Labour in Ondo State, comprising NLC, TUC, and JNC rose from an emergency meeting held on July 19, 2023, seriously perturbed by the insensitive increase in the pump price of petroleum products in the country weeks after a similar exercise without any attendant palliative measures for the already pauperized workers and masses of our country.”
Since this government move is beyond of most people’s financial reach, we join other good-hearted Nigerians in strongly opposing it.
