Government should take preventative measures against flooding following NiMET alert – Speaker of Niger, Sarkindaji

Since the Nigerian Metrological Agencies (NiMET) have warned of potentially heavy rainfall this year, the Speaker of the Niger State House of Assembly, Hon. Muhammad Abdulmalik Sarkindaji, has revealed that legislators recently passed a motion urging the executive to take proactive measure towards tackling flood in the state.

Sarkindaji, who was sent by Governor Muhammad Umar Bago to console flood victims in the Rafin-Gora hamlet in the Kontagora Local Government Area, made the announcement.

He said that the administration needed to take preventative measures because NIMET had predicted that devastating floods would follow the rainfall in the state.

The Bago has donated N3 million to the victims and urged the people to stop construction on floodplains and other low-lying areas.

The governor voiced his dismay at the loss of life and property inflicted by the hurricane, saying, “No amount of money can bring back those lives that were lost.” Therefore, I beg the people to accept this tragedy as God’s will.

Alh. Usman Mohammed, District Head of Rafin Gora, gave a speech in which he thanked the governor for visiting and donating to the community, reassuring the governor that the funds would be distributed fairly and effectively.

Over a hundred homes and properties worth millions of naira were destroyed in the Rafin Gora community and the adjacent villages on Wednesday night as a result of strong rainstorms with a heavy downpour.
