Awoleye Joshua Oluwatofunmi, who is thought to be a con artist, admitted to telling a white American woman that he was black.
Paul Odama, the Police Commissioner of Kwara State, walked him around while he spoke, according to the kuryaloaded.
The CP was upset that scammers had ruined Nigeria’s reputation abroad. He promised that the Nigeria Police Force would find them and bring them to justice.
Awoleye, a 23-year-old suspected internet con artist, is said to have scammed Vonapolouis Moss (f), an African-American woman from 2962, W64th Court Merrillville, Indiana, United States of America.
On Friday, he was shown off at the headquarters of the State police command in Ilorin.
Vonapolous told reporters about her ordeal in an interview. She said she got in touch with the suspect, Awoleye Joshua, who said he was a black American but lives in Nigeria. “I told him I was also black, and we talked and talked,” she said.
“He said he was a writer and a student and asked if I could help him with about 170,000 US dollars. I asked how I could help him, and he said I could send the money through an electronic transfer.
“He then asked if I could send him gift cards, so I sent him a 200-dollar gift card. I then sent him pictures, and we kept talking. He told me he was hungry and needed money to buy food, and that I was the only person he had, so I sent him another 100-dollar gift card.”
“Awoleye Joshua said he needed more food, so I kept sending him more money and talking to him until he asked me to come to Nigeria, so I did,” the upset woman said.
Vonapolouis said through tears when asked what she wanted the authorities to do about the situation, “I just want to go home. I think I’ve learned my lesson.”
“I have been helping people, and I don’t want anything bad to happen to him, Awoleye.
“I don’t know what else to say, other than that I think Nigeria is a beautiful place. I’ve never lived somewhere with so many beautiful black people in one place.
“The people are so kind, the place is beautiful, and I would love to come back with my family,” she said.
Awoleye, a 23-year-old HND 1 Mechanical Engineering student at Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin, who was said to be a native of Offa in Kwara State but was born in Ibadan, Oyo State, said they were dating.
He said that he had lied under the name Howard Adams, but that he later told her his real name, Awoleye Joshua Oluwatofunmi, and they kept dating.
“So, we were in a good relationship, and I asked her for money. She said no because she doesn’t want to be used, and I told her I’m not that kind of person.”
“I asked her for help, which she gave, and she said she wants to come to Nigeria. Since I had nothing to hide, I told her to come to Nigeria.”
According to the suspect, Vonapolouis landed at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos on Monday night and slept in a hotel in Lagos.
“On Tuesday morning, she told me she had already landed at the Ilorin International Airport. I called an Uber to take her there, and we stayed at a hotel in Ilorin that she had already booked while she was in the U.S.,” he said.
Awoleye said that they didn’t fight until he was arrested at the hotel. “I don’t know why I was arrested,” he said.
He said that they went to a Bureau de Change in Ilorin, where the American woman changed some dollars into Nigerian currency. Since she didn’t have a bank account in Nigeria, she put the money into his account.
Awoleye said that after they left the Bureau de Change, they went to Shoprite Mall and bought some things. When they got back to the hotel, he put the rest of the money in the drawer in their room.
He denied taking 5,000 US dollars from the victim and said that all he got from her during their relationship was 800 US dollars, which she gave to him willingly.
“I have no reason to have told her I was American instead of Nigerian. She helped me because she knew me and said she wants to visit my family in Nigeria. “My family does not live in Ilorin,” said Awoleye.
