Monday saw a suspension of business operations in Jalingo, Taraba State as university students demonstrated against what they claimed was the government’s disregard for their concerns.
Students at Taraba State University, TSU, who were scheduled to start their first-semester exams, expressed their resentment at the government for failing to address the predicament of instructors.
Arc. Darius Dickson Ishaku, the state governor, was called upon to be removed from office by the students who occupied the state capitol during a rally.
Despite the fact that there were heavily armed security personnel stationed throughout the city, the students who showed up at the government building tore down all posters and billboards bearing the Peoples Democratic Party’s logo (PDP)
Additionally, the students set fire to tires throughout the city’s main thoroughfares, impeding traffic and causing gridlock.
As the demonstration gained momentum, business owners along all the major roadways closed their doors out of concern that they would be taken advantage of by hoodlums.
When asked whether they would continue protesting until the state administration deemed it appropriate to address the predicament of the teachers, some students who talked to DAILY POST stated they would.
Recall that the professors recently held a nonviolent demonstration on the grounds of the school to demand the payment of their unpaid ten-month salary and benefits.
In a letter delivered to Vice Chancellor Professor Sunday Bako during the demonstration, the university employees, led by NASU Chairman Solomon Ishaya Audu and SSANU Chairman Bitrus Joseph Ajibauka, expressed their concern over the alleged treatment they received from the government of Ishaku.
