A civil society organization called The Natives has cautioned that some desperate politicians are fueling the present conflict between the Department of State Security Service and the Central Bank of Nigeria in an effort to derail the 2023 elections.

The group announced this during a joint news conference on Wednesday in Abuja with other Civil Society Organizations, youth organizations, the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), lawyers, and others.

Smart Edwards, the group’s chairman, expressed concern that some Nigerians were being duped into believing unfounded threats to the CBN.

It said that the apex bank’s mandate gave it the authority to strengthen measures that would support the naira and economy’s growth and stabilization.

He claimed that as a citizen-led anti-sabotage group, it was totally dedicated to holding free and fair elections.

“We are fully aware of saboteurs in midnight meetings, preparing to scandalize and blackmail persons of high renown as a forerunner to sponsor protests around the country, this has already failed because we will fight,” the organization claimed.

“On the latest DSS and CBN scandal, we can see fifth columnists and emergency activists mixing up within politicians to discredit institutions that should be apolitical. These are two institutions that will be burdened with our elections.”

The organization emphasized that President Muhammadu Buhari had displayed unequivocal will and determination to secure free and fair elections through strong body language that was readable by all parties, including his own.
