EEDC condemns pointless bush burning during the harmattan season

The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) has condemned the South-East citizens’ recent outbreak of bush burning, especially as the harmattan approaches.

The EEDC issued a warning while also reminding locals that the harmattan season is typically marked by a dryness of the environment, which makes it very simple for fire to spread at any given time. This includes dry leaves, objects, and people.

Emeka Ezeh, the head of corporate communications at EEDC, said the threats presented by fire outbreak during harmattan made the warning imperative.

Ezeh talked about the costs the business had incurred over the years as a result of unchecked, indiscriminate bush and garbage dump burning.

He emphasized that the power network crosses through bushes, forests, neighborhoods, and farmlands, and that any burning, if left unchecked, could cause a fire to break out and damage transformers, feeder pillar units, and the lines and their related accessories, as well as cause fatalities, interrupt the flow of electricity, and damage other properties.

“We have found that during harmattan season, hunters use fire to flush out concealing bush creatures for simple capture or killing, while some may be to help farmers prepare such fields for the following farming season.

According to the EEDC, “whatever the purpose of bush burning may be, it is urged that such fires be controlled so they do not escalate to undesired sites or areas.”
