Enzo Fernandez, the new Chelsea midfielder, has thanked the club’s co-owner Todd Boehly for “doing everything they could” to accomplish his £107 million transfer.
Fernandez has signed an eight-and-a-half-year contract with Chelsea after the Blues paid a British-record transfer fee to Benfica.
The sum for the 22-year-old midfielder has eclipsed Jack Grealish’s £100 million transfer from Aston Villa to Manchester City in August 2021.
Fernandez underwent a medical on deadline day in Lisbon after a late breakthrough in negotiations before paperwork was delivered just in time.
He has now expressed his gratitude to Chelsea and Boehly for their perseverance.
“I am grateful to Chelsea and its proprietors for going above and beyond to include me in this endeavor.
“I’m thrilled and excited to join the Pride of London, to play in the best league in the world and to compete for the biggest prizes.
“I can’t wait to play in front of our supporters and help my teammates on and off the field,” Fernandez said, according to the club’s official website.
