The North Bank region of Makurdi, the state capital, is where the BIRS task team on illegal roadblocks made nine high-profile arrests.

Governor Hyacinth Alia inaugurated the TaskForce Team in September, and BIRS Chairman Mr. Emmanuel Agema was at the helm.

The Task Force team destroyed the Area checkpoint, and suspects were turned over to the authorities to face the full force of the law.

In an interview with journalists, CSP George Iorbee (rtd), chairman of the Taskforce Team, claimed the group’s mission is to “eradicate illegal checkpoints and clean up the state of multiple extortion on motorists.”

After the initial arrests of three criminals, he said, the task force team ran into stiff opposition and found the illegal roadblocks had been re-erected.

Mr. Iorbee claims that his team immediately retreated and was joined by army officers, who detained a further six of the thugs.

Commuters along the route have thanked the state administration for the operation and asked that it become standard procedure in order to permanently eliminate the unlawful checkpoint operators.
