God’s Grace In order to ensure a fair election this year, John Cardinal Onaiyekan, a former Catholic archbishop of the Abuja Diocese, gave advice to politicians in the nation on Saturday in Abuja.
He declared that Nigerians would no longer tolerate rigged elections in the nation.
At the Holy Trinity Church in Maitama, Abuja, where he was celebrating his 40th year as a bishop, he issued the warning.
He forewarned politicians plotting to rig the election results this year that the nation’s current attitude might spark riots at the slightest provocation.
According to Onaiyekan, Nigerians currently long for a better nation. He advised lawmakers to refrain from any type of manipulation, pointing out that the election would no longer be business as usual with regard to the outcome of the polls.
He warned everyone, whether they were in government or not, to stop manipulating the results or inciting violence. Instead, he said, they should let the election proceed in a free and fair manner.
Onaiyekan insisted that he does not have a special candidate but stated that the suggestion was for the politicians to recognize that “the atmosphere in which Nigeria is presently is not an attitude that they will quietly tolerate a rigged election.”
He urged politicians to fear God, adding that when they left this life, He would hold them accountable for their deeds.
He said that even if no one questions, God will, and that God has His own way of questioning the conduct of all humanity.
