Minister promises help from the federal government for Kaduna’s ginger growers who have been hit by a fungal disease

Abubakar Kyari, Nigeria’s Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, has promised to help Ginger growers whose crops were destroyed by a mysterious fungal disease in Kaduna lately.

A few weeks after more than 200 Ginger farmlands and produce worth 10 billion naira were destroyed in Southern Kaduna, the government promised aid.

During a Thursday visit to the devastated farmlands in Southern Kaduna, the Minister, who was represented by the Assistant Chief Agric Officer; Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, Mrs. Rita Agbogo, promised swift involvement.

The Minister’s envoy, who is leading a five-man team to Southern Kaduna, reaffirmed the Ministry’s dedication to preventing a recurrence of the calamity and to providing necessary aid to the afflicted farmers.

“We are already feeling the pains of our dear Ginger farmers,” she said, explaining why the team was doing a damage assessment in the first place. We were able to assess the level of destruction to these farmlands by visiting several of them. We will advise the Ministry on the most effective means of assisting the struggling farmers.

“As we speak now, we are yet to know the cause of the damage, and that is why we are here with other relevant organizations,” she stated when asked what might have caused the fungal disease. In order to identify the root of the problem and forestall such incidents in the future, we will conduct study and maintain communication with the aforementioned groups.
