Nemanja Vidic, a former player for Manchester United, has urged manager Erik ten Hag to defend under-fire captain Harry Maguire despite the player’s subpar play.
Vidic wants Ten Hag to give Maguire a sense of strength and authority at Manchester United.
He claims that the Dutchman should start the England international in weaker matches to help the defense regain confidence and form.
Since moving to Manchester United for £80 million in 2019 from Leicester City, Maguire has drawn criticism.
The signing makes the 29-year-old the most expensive defender in the world, and it has subsequently been a bit of a burden for him.
While Ten Hag preferred players like Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez, Maguire has struggled at Old Trafford this season, making just 12 appearances across competitions and six in the starting lineup.
“Maguire is obviously not performing at his best this season. One of the things you may do, in my opinion, is to refrain from participating in every game while you try to regain your form and confidence. Although there aren’t many easy games in the Premier League, a coach might play him in them and bench him for the tougher games, according to Vidic.
The player needs to feel strong and powerful again on the field, not as it is right now, where he feels like it isn’t happening for him. People are waiting for you to make a mistake while you are under so much pressure, making it tough to play effectively.
