It is imperative that the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) not fall prey to official corruption or mismanagement, according to Mr. Sunny Echono, the agency’s executive secretary, because of the vital role it plays in filling funding gaps and providing essential infrastructure to the nation’s tertiary institutions.
He elaborated by saying that he made changes to the agency so it could better carry out its mission because of that.

On Saturday night, he made the statement while accepting Champion Newspapers Limited’s Outstanding Public Servant of the Year award.
We have implemented several reforms since we took over to improve the agency’s operations and fulfill its duty to the Nigerian people. All of us are cognizant of the fact that TETFund is vital in ensuring that our educational institutions have the necessary infrastructure and essential amenities, and in educating both faculty and staff.
Feedback from recipients, both educational institutions and individuals, has been quite encouraging, and we couldn’t be happier about it. Nonetheless, we get a lot of attention as our organization is well-known for its impressive achievements and favorable responses to various situations.
Obviously, some people will feel the negative effects of the reforms because of their scope and character. We anticipate that individuals in that situation would not feel at ease. A public servant, though, must be prepared to “develop thick skin” in the face of unfounded criticism in order to continue doing their job effectively, he added.
In addition, he said that he and his staff would be more motivated to work hard in light of the newspaper house’s honor, which would lead to greater achievements for the agency.
Echono assured that TETFund could handle the growing number of institutions it serves, despite concerns that the agency is overwhelmed.
There will be a greater demand for our services at newly established public universities, but we are prepared to meet that need. The institutions will be taken care of by us. For instance, we rotate our commitment among the universities in a state if there are more than one. After we attend to A today, B will be our turn tomorrow, he said.
Additionally, Echono promised that the fund would not abandon any initiatives it had begun and would instead make every effort to see them through to completion.
