Following Cristiano Ronaldo’s transfer to Al-Nassr, his enduring rival Lionel Messi now has the opportunity to top three of the spectacular records held by the Portugal captain in Europe.
Recall that Ronaldo just signed with Al-Nassr, a Saudi Pro League team, following the mutual termination of his contract with Manchester United.
For more than 15 years, Ronaldo and Messi have been competing for supremacy.
The team has repeatedly pushed one another above their comfort zones, shattering numerous records in the process.
There are many football records that the two Ballon d’Or winners now hold, and no player has come close.
Ronaldo, though, will no longer be competing in Europe during the next two years after agreeing to a contract with Al-Nassr that will keep him with the team through 2025.
As a result, Messi, who presently plays for Paris Saint-Germain, has a chance to soon catch up to and break some of Ronaldo’s records.
DAILY POST examines a few of Ronaldo’s European records that Messi might equal or surpass.
– Most assists in the UEFA Champions League: Ronaldo presently leads Messi with 41 assists in the competition.
This season, Messi will have the chance to beat Ronaldo when Paris Saint-Germain plays Bayern Munich in the Round of 16.
The captain of Argentina needs just two more assists to surpass Cristiano Ronaldo as the player with the most in Champions League history.
– Most goals in Europe: Ronaldo surpassed Messi to claim the title of footballer with the most goals in Europe’s top five leagues (Ligue 1, La Liga, Premier League, Serie A, and EPL).
During his tenure with Manchester United, Real Madrid in La Liga, Juventus, and Sporting, the 37-year-old scored 701 goals. Messi only needs two more goals for PSG to reach Ronaldo’s total.
Messi will have a difficult time surpassing Cristiano Ronaldo’s goal total in the UEFA Champions League this year.
To pass Ronaldo, the former Barcelona captain needs to score twelve more goals.
