A team made up of the Police, Army, and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) used tear gas to disperse several youths who were protesting the Akwa Ibom State Government’s failure to pay them their five percent of the thirteen percent oil derivation that was due to them.
When they were teargassed, the Ibom youngsters Council (IYC)-affiliated protesting youngsters, which included both men and women, were forced to flee into nearby streets and Ibom Plaza for safety.
The teenagers stormed the Government House in Uyo on Tuesday, dressed in all-black attire and waving a red and black flag as they demanded their portion of the allotment.
They came out to make sure the governor looked into the situation, according to Comrade Victor Bassey James, the Secretary of the Niger Delta Movement, who spoke with journalists about their complaints.
“We have endured much suffering, and our kids lack empowerment. We have gathered in large numbers to demand that the governor look into our situation because of this, he stated.
Along with the Commander of the 2 Brigade of the Nigerian Army, his NSCDC counterpart, and the Commissioner of Internal Security, Olatoye Durosinmi, the Police Commissioner, spoke to the demonstrators in the meantime.
He pleaded for restraint and exhorted them to go home, assuring them that the State Governor will attend to their complaints when it was opportune.
