The Niger Delta Congress (NDC) denounced the “terrorist attack” in Edo State and issued a warning about escalating regional insecurity.
In response to the last Saturday’s kidnapping of numerous tourists in Igueben, the organization released a statement on Tuesday.
As they waited to board a train from Igueben Station to Warri in Delta State, the event resulted in some passengers being hurt and more than 30 being abducted.
Speaking for the NDC, Mudiaga Ogboru denounced the ambush on defenseless bystanders, noting a string of assaults since the previous year.
He said that on July 8, 2022, “the same terrorists masquerading as herders” attempted and failed to carry out the “same styled terrorist attack successfully performed in Igueben” at the Abraka train station in Delta.
The organization also recalls fatal assaults on communities in the latter few months of 2022 in the states of Rivers, Bayelsa, and Cross River.
The governors have yet to create a regional security organization as evidence of their commitment to protecting people and property, the NDC claimed, noting that the frequency was alarming.
The group said their “reluctance to act” was “becoming untenable and intolerable” despite ongoing outrage over tales of strange, armed people lurking in forest areas.
The NDC instructed the regional governors to put plans in place as soon as possible to stop additional attacks and to try to secure the release of those who have been kidnapped.
The statement expressed sympathy to the injured and the families of the captured people, wishing them a speedy recovery and a safe return of their loved ones.
Precious Aigbonoga, the president of the Igueben Area Customary Court, and Festus Edughele, a former member of the Edo House of Assembly, were both kidnapped on Monday.
The judge is the spouse of Etsako West Constituency 1 Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) House of Assembly candidate Afebu Aigbonoga.
