The Nigeria Premier Football League will now be used to refer to the top division, replacing the previous name, Nigeria Professional Football League.
Prior to the 2012–2013 season, the failing League Management Company (LMC) decided to stick with the previous name.
The Nigerian Premier League, Nigerian Premiership, Nigerian Professional League, Nigerian National League-First Division, and Nigerian Football League have all been used to refer to the country’s top division at various points in time.
The 202/23 NPFL season will begin on Sunday with Akwa United hosting Bendel Insurance in the season opener.
The event is scheduled to take place at Uyo’s spectacular Godswill Akpabio International Stadium.
The nine further matchday-one contests will occur the following weekend.
The NPFL’s current champions are Rivers United.
