The government of Anambra State has spoken out against what it calls a “vicious and unprovoked” online campaign against the state.

At a news conference on Saturday in Awka, the government’s position was outlined by Don Onyenji, the Commissioner for Culture, Entertainment, and Tourism.

According to Onyenji, citizens who use to social media to air their grievances against the government are doing nothing more than discouraging possible investors and demarketing the state.

In his opinion, journalists and others who have grievances with the state government should go through the traditional media channels and make extra efforts to acquire responses from the appropriate ministry, department, or agency.

According to the Commissioner, Anambra’s tourism and hospitality industry are on the upswing, but the state’s unfavorable reputation is hurting government efforts to promote the area.

As a member of the entertainment business, I feel compelled to declare that it is unfair for our people to take to social media to celebrate whatever they perceive the government is not doing on their behalf. He urged the media to exercise restraint in their criticism.

But Onyenji assured everyone that the government was always willing to respond to concerns and accept blame when it was due.
