Anniversary of Independence: Gov. Sani appeals for fostering consensus

The governor of Kaduna State, Uba Sani, has urged Nigeria’s ruling class to work toward reaching agreement on their vision for the nation.

Speaking to the people of Kaduna State on the 63rd anniversary of the nation’s independence, he said that at the time of the country’s independence in 1960, the people had high hopes for a prosperous future and that the founding fathers had imagined a nation that would become the Leading Black Nation on Earth.

He lamented that ethnic and religious distinctions were still being used to serve individual or group goals, saying that 63 years later, Nigerians had not yet succeeded in forming a truly Nigerian character.

We continue to face developmental obstacles, particularly in the fields of infrastructure, education, health, agriculture, and security, he added with regret. For political leaders, the rising rate of poverty is a key source of concern.

The governor thought that in order to address domestic security issues, the country should take up its former peacekeeping and law enforcement responsibilities in West Africa and Africa, unite with those nations, and aid their security forces in the struggle against terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, armed robbery, and other forms of criminality.

He said that the administration in Kaduna State is fully devoted to securing the state and reestablishing trust in its people by upholding justice, equity, and fair play and by deciding to provide relief to the needy.

In order to ensure that the poor, disadvantaged, and underserved in rural areas benefit from state and federal governments’ social intervention programs, he claimed that he had established the Financial Inclusion and Literacy Committee.

“Our administration places a priority on rural transformation. We intend to build up our infrastructure significantly in order to revive the rural economy. Every resident of the state should be able to feel the effects of the government. No region of the state will be overlooked.

“We want to put Kaduna State back in the position it formerly held as the mashup of Nigerian nations. To create the Kaduna State of our dreams, we fervently hope for the assistance and collaboration of our people, he promised.
