Following a move by the faction of Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso to alter the party’s constitution and emblem, the issue affecting the leadership of the New Nigeria Peoples Party has assumed a new dimension.

The National Auditor of the NNPP, Ladipo Johnson, acknowledged the intention to change the constitution in an exclusive interview.

The development comes three days after the NNPP presidential candidate was ousted by a group of the party led by Major Agbo for allegedly engaging in anti-party actions and stealing party campaign funds.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, Abdulsalam Abdulrasaq, the NNPP’s factional National Publicity Secretary, declared Kwankwaso’s dismissal.

Abdulrasaq stated that Kwankwaso was expelled immediately after failing to show up before the disciplinary panel to defend himself against the claims made against him.

Disaffection within the party after the removal of the former governor of Kano led to blame-trading among leaders of the opposition camps.

A few days after the drama, the Saturday PUNCH’s investigation showed that the Kwankwaso camp had quietly changed the NNPP’s logo and constitution, ostensibly to loosen Dr. Boniface Aniebonam’s control.

The national auditor denied the action was taken in response to the establishment of a faction inside the NNPP, despite Johnson, the chairman of the disciplinary committee that expelled some factional party members a few weeks ago, having confirmed the development.

“No, there is no connection to any faction. We had already talked about it at the NEC. We (the Agbo faction) take ourselves seriously, unlike them. However, we haven’t yet modified the logo. We’re going to open it up so that our members may pitch ideas and compete,” he stated.

Major Agbo, the faction’s acting national chairman, responded by telling our correspondent that they were aware of the covert move and thought it was intended to strip the founder of his immunity.

He remarked, “Clearly, the proposed constitutional amendment and new logo they’re talking about are intentional. That was due to their sudden realization that the founder, the man they are looking for, enjoys immunity under the terms of that constitution. They are hastily amending it because of this.
