Mrs. Funmi Falana, the wife of a human rights advocate and lawyer from Lagos, has said that there are little prospects for women to hold leadership positions in the national political system.
Falana characterized the pattern as prejudice that needs to be stopped after the general elections in 2023 and further argued that doing so will enable them to realize their full potential and advance society.
Therefore, the lawyer advised major political parties to strictly enforce the requirement that women hold 35% of all appointed positions in politics.
After hosting her annual Christmas celebration with the kids from the Erelu Angela Adebayo Children’s Home in Iyin-Ekiti, Ekiti State, she made this statement yesterday.
“This is one of the discrimination against women that we have been arguing against,” the speaker added, blaming the low involvement of women in politics on the non-actualization of the 35% affirmative action for women representation in positions of authority.
“Women can even outperform males in any position of authority, including non-political roles,” says the author. “Even when women come out to fight elections, they receive little or no votes because they believe their place is in the kitchen. But that period has long passed.
Falana, who acknowledged that the country’s political system discourages women, continued: “Most of their meetings are held at night like nocturnal creatures, and responsible women are expected to be with their families at such times.
“I believe politicians should look into this because women’s incapacity to attend such late-night political gatherings means that decisions are made without them and is one of the reasons they aren’t actively participating in politics.
No one may be discriminated against on the basis of sex, according to the Constitution. In other words, everything that disadvantages women is against the law and is invalid.
The court determined that the fact that women do not have adequate representation in governance is a breach of their constitutional rights, the speaker added.
Before the upcoming democratic age, she joined a number of other prominent people in asking for a shift that will offer women the same chance and consideration as their male counterparts in political posts.
