According to the federal government, the Conditional Cash Transfer (CCT) initiative’s government-sponsored poverty intervention will assist 15 million households in Nigeria.
In an interactive session with journalists in Abuja, Betta Edu, the minister of humanitarian affairs and poverty alleviation, disclosed this.

She stated that the intervention will assist 15 million low-income households as soon as it has been presented to and obtained the president Bola Tinubu’s assent.

Who benefited, who is the person, who are the individuals, where are they, and can you show us evidence of this advantage that you got? These questions need to be answered in order to start putting names and faces to stories.

There is a great disconnect between the government and the people; they don’t feel the pulse of the government, and we want to repair that gap, therefore your role as a journalist is to help the government be transparent and to be as near to the people as possible, she said.

The minister stated that “The Ministry is preparing to host the Humanitarian Dialogue as well as creation of the Renewed Hope Humanitarian and Poverty Alleviation Trust Fund (HPATF)” during a previous meeting with the World Bank over the CCT.

“The Federal Government’s financial provision and allocation, Development Partners, the International Community, Taxes, and Private Sector Contributions, among Others, are anticipated to contribute to the Trust Fund.

The National Social Register (NSR) needs to be verified and expanded, and the Ministry requires the World Bank’s assistance.and give your technical assistance so that you can collaborate with the Ministry to meet Mr. President’s goal.

The World Bank’s flexibility in accommodating the Ministry’s refocused goal to end poverty, she said in response to the bank, is a positive development.

Shubham Chaudhuri, the country director for the World Bank, stated that the bank will give the new minister the assistance he needs to carry out the ministry’s new objective.

The anticipated disbursement of $800 million for the Social Safety Nets Project will start as soon as possible, he added.

“We will provide technical support in the Ministry’s preparation for the UNGA, give specialized backing for the establishment of the Trust Fund, and support the verification and expansion of the National Social Register.”
