A new strike by academics at the nation’s public institutions cannot be ruled out in 2023, according to Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi, a former president of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU.
On Saturday, Ogunyemi revealed this while participating in the end-of-year special 2022: In Retrospect on Channels TV.
Remember that in 2022, ASUU began a prolonged strike that lasted more than eight months in response to demands for enhanced welfare and unpaid earned allowances, among other things.
However, ASUU called off the strike when the Industrial Court ordered its members to report back to work.
However, using its no-work, no-pay policy as the justification, the Federal Government only paid the lecturers 50% of their salaries for the month of October.
The Federal Government, according to Ogunyemi, is oblivious to the struggles of ASUU, and it would be unfair to pay its members in arrears when they are already working in arrears.
“We need to know what causes strike action. Nobody, in my opinion, can guarantee that there won’t be a strike in 2023, Ogunyemi stated.
