As gunmen stormed a military checkpoint on Ubomiri/Nwaorieubi road in the Mbaitoli Local Government Area of Imo State on Saturday night, tensions in Imo were palpable.

People nearby have already left their homes out of fear of another attack, according to kuryaloaded, who lamented that they don’t know where to escape.

According to a witness who requested anonymity on Sunday morning, there was intense gunfire that lasted for more than 45 minutes and resulted in two fatalities.

The thugs, who allegedly opened fire on the soldiers, arrived in a Toyota Sienna about 7:30 p.m., parked far away because of heavy traffic, and then stormed the checkpoint, according to him.

In recent months, he claimed, gunmen had targeted security personnel as well as Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) headquarters.

The Army spokesperson, Capt. Joseph Akubo, did not return calls or respond to a message provided to him at the time this article was produced, thus attempts to elicit a response from the Army were unsuccessful.
