Wednesday saw a demonstration in the streets by employees at the Moshood Abiola Polytechnic (MAPOLY) in Abeokuta over their “unpaid three months salary.”
The workers had descended in force to denounce the failure to put the new minimum wage into effect, the lack of promotions since 2019, and the outstanding arrears of 55 months in pension payments.
The employees yelled as they carried signs bearing various inscriptions, “We want new management, release our promotion as and when due, and please pay our paychecks.
Later, the demonstrators who had earlier blocked access to the administrative block of the school barricaded the main entrance.
Dada Olalekan, the chairman of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Polytechnics (SSANIP) in MAPOLY, told reporters during the protest that the Ogun State Government should take a page from the Oyo, Lagos, and Osun State Governments and ask them to take over the polytechnic’s account and pay directly from government funds.
“We are here to claim our entitlements,” Olalekan declared. From October 2022, the management of MAPOLY owes us three months’ salary. The minimum wage is enforced by all other businesses and government organizations, but MAPOLY has refused to do so. We owe the management 55 months’ worth of back pension payments. No one in this room currently has a pension plan. There is no pension or future for someone who retires tomorrow.
