Politicians who incite religious conflict should be punished, says El-Rufai, in 2023

Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai has declared that it is time to punish politicians for dividing the nation along religious lines.

El-Rufai declared that politicians who use religion as a weapon to sow discord will be punished in the elections of 2023.

He spoke while the Sultan Foundation for Peace and Development’s headquarters was being opened.

The governor pleaded with the royal fathers to pray for free and fair elections in 2023.

He regretted that some politicians were utilizing churches and other places of worship for political purposes.

“I believe that this election provides us with a very special opportunity to remove religion from politics in Nigeria and punish those who attempt to do so.

But he added that at a time when the entire globe is dealing with problems like ultra-nationalism and disruptions to global supply chains, Nigeria doesn’t need people running for office in churches or conducting private meetings with religious leaders to encourage ethnic and religious divide.

Recently, various politicians have started visiting some of the most important churches in Nigeria, including Peter Obi, the presidential candidate for the Labour Party.
