President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) Professor Emmanuel Osodeke has stated that the Federal Government will not cut off financing to universities.
He argues that it is lawful for the government to provide money to federal universities.
It was in response to comments attributed to Minister of Education Prof Tahir Mamman that Osodeke made these remarks. Mamman recently stated that the Federal Government would give universities the freedom to seek out alternative means of supporting their operations.
It is written into law, so it’s inconceivable that the Federal Government of Nigeria would refuse to provide funding for public universities, he said. The Constitution guarantees this very thing. Section 18 of the United States Constitution guarantees free public education at all levels, including college.
That it cannot be judged fairly is the only real issue. As a result, I stated that, based on our observations, we do not expect the government to announce that it will withdraw its influence on universities. The percentage of GDP allocated to education in Nigeria is one of the lowest worldwide.
